We went to Mokauea Island as a field trip on October 9th, 2010. Mokauea Island is in Keehi Lagoon between Sand Isalnd and the Honolulu Airport. The island is a small one, about 10 acres and is the last fishing village on Oahu.
We got together at HPU downtown shuttle bus stop to take a school bus to go to Sand Island. On Sand Island, we already saw Mokauea Island above. Our teacher introduced about the island and related the island and World War 2. The island seems histrical and important site.
We got canoes to go to Mokauea Island.
On Mokauea Island, a wamen living the island talked about the island. Five families live on the island, and we saw some houses. The families make the island alive. We saw airplanes flying near above the island, so that she stopped her talking sometimes for thier noise. The island has a fish pond, but she said there were 41 big fish ponds around the island, and the smallest one among the fish ponds is the size of Mokauea Island. She showed us a picture of Molauea Island like below. This island has some invasive plants within the red circles.

We moved on to remove weeds on the island. I had my own gloves. Some of the weeds were hard to be removed, and something like nails stuck my sandals. These were garbages like bottles. We removed most of the weeds and some garbages.

We went back to Sand Island with canoes. This time, I rowed canoe with students. There was much time until the school bus came for us to take us the downtown shuttle bus stop. Therefore, Some students including me swam around Sand Island. The seawater was so clear but cold. However, we could swim and enjoy swimming We took the bus and went back the bus stop. I really enjoyed this field trip.
